Farrell Boys and Molloy Girls win team titles |
May 25, 2008-Edging second place Fordham Prep by 11.5 points
Monsignor Farrell takes home Championship trophy in this
years addition of the CHSAA City Championships. In route to
the team title Farrell took home three individual event
titles. James Farley took the 800 meter run title
clocking 1:55.36, Vincenzo Chiariello in the Discus with a
toss of 154'4", and the relay team of Corey Orazen, Matt
Pfaff, Steve Amoroso, and Anthony Evangelist took the 1600
meter relay title by edging Holy Trinity in a thrilling
finish down the final straight away running 3:20.33 to win
by .57 seconds.
One the girls side Archbishop Molloy won by 12 points over
Kellenberg Memorial earning big points in the final event of
the day, the girl's javelin. Lead by Brittney
Dombrowski winning the Javelin with a new meet record of
126'8", Molloy almost sweep the event taking the next 3
spots for 15 points. Other winners for Molloy include
Jessica Conter running 25.92 in the 200m dash, Alex Jean
Joseph in the triple jump with a leap of 36'8.50", and
double event winner Rebecca Power jumping 9 feet in the pole
vault and throwing 37'5" in the shot put.
Other highlights for the boys in the meet included Brian
McGovern on Mount Saint Michaels winning the pole vault with
a jump of 16'0" which broke the meet record set last year by
Kyle Duggan of Farrell. McGovern, then moved the bar
to a new state record high at 16'6" but just missed clearing
the height. With the feat McGovern was also named the
boy's MVP for the field events. One the track having
another great day at Icahn Stadium was Nickolei Mahlung of
Bishop Loughlin winning the 100m and 200m dash with
impressive times of 11.12 and 22.35.
The girls meet included highlights from Phylis Francis
breaking the meet record in the 800m with a time of 2:11.67
which dated back to 1986 by McAuliffe of St. Anthony's.
Along with Dombrowski; Nina Renken of Sacred Heart also
broke a throwing event record in the discus bettering the
record by almost 10 feet with a toss of 126'7". Renken
and Dombrowski were named co-MVP for the field events. |

April 11-12, 2008 - Icahn Stadium welcomed the
2008 edition of the New York City's
Mayors Cup. This year’s event saw not only
eight new Stadium records but also set the
record as the largest track & field meet to be
hosted at the Stadium. A record setting 220
teams and 4500 athlete participated in this
year’s annual event.
Monsignor
Farrell High
School took the team
title for the boys, winning their 4th
consecutive title with a total of 40 points. On
the Girls side, Boys and
Girls High School walked away with the first
place trophy with 39 points. |

Competition got underway Friday night with both
high hurdle stadium records being broken.
On the boy’s side, Keith
Nkrumah of Midwood ran 14.83 to win the event,
while on the girl’s side Janice Jackson from
Medgar Evers ran 14.51 in the preliminaries to
later win the event in the finals. Alex
Orlando got the ball rolling Friday night for
Monsignor Farrell's pursuit of another team
title by taking 6 points in the 3,000 meter
steeplechase running 10:08.03. |

With the action moving at a fast pace Friday
night, it set up the tempo for what
developed on Saturday. The day started off
with the ladies hitting the track and
breaking four more stadium records in the
process. Sheveena Rowe of Tilden
High School set
the first record of the day by running 12.25
in the 100 meter dash. Nadonnia Rodriques
of Boys & Girls High School,
established a stadium record in the 200 meet
dash clocking a 24.59 helping lead her
school to the team title.
TThe meet also saw a great run in the
800 meters as Catherine McAuley High School
star; Phyllis Francis ran 2:13.25 to break
the third stadium record of the day and also
established herself as on of the top
distance runners in the nation. The last
record on the girl’s side was set by
Brittany Dombrowski of Archbishop Molloy in
the Javelin Throw. Dombrowski, earlier in
the season tied the record which she already
held but was able to top that performance
today with a toss of 121'01". Boys and
Girls High School gained huge points by
dominating the 400 meter dash as Meagan
Gillespie (56.70), Hadassah Bruni and
Kenesha Abrams taking first thru third place
in the event. That was not the only sweep
of the day for Boys and Girls
High School as
they won all three relays (400 meter, 1600
meter and 3200 meter relay) at the end of
the meet. |

After the girls completed their turn on the track
the boys were able to take the spot light. Action
quickly got underway with Nickolei Mahlung of
Bishop
Loughlin High
School smashing the stadium record
in the 100m dash running a fast mid-season time of
10.80, to win the event by a small margin over Ayo
Ishola Isijola of
Sheepshead
Bay who clocked 10.86.
The final stadium record was set by Jareen Stewart,
of Archbishop Molly, with a massive leap of 22'10.5"
in the Long Jump. For the team title, Monsignor
Farrell added one more individual title, with James
Farley taking the 800 meter run with a time of
1:56.86. They also won the last event of the day to
secure the victory by winning the 4 x 400 meter
relay in a thrilling home stretch victory over Curtis High school
running 3:23.42.
Catch most of these teams back in action next week,
as the Randall's Island Sports Foundation hosts the
2008 New York Relays.. |
